It all started back in 2013 when Tom Humphreys and Andreas Hanakamp were contemplating about a modern, well performing cruising yacht taking advantage of the developments in yacht racing over the past 25 years. An ocean greyhound that allows owners to cruise safely, roam the oceans, hang out in remote locations and live on board in comfort and style.
There was no such yacht on the market - so it was time to create one.
“ I am frequently approached by clients tired of slow sailing yachts restricted by traditional hull speed seeing me covering more miles in a day than they can in a week`s time sailing. It was natural to start discussing with Tom an "honest yacht for honest sailors", with the focus on what we love most about sailing: Sailing! Involving Gaber´s Ocean tec yard was a logical choice - he builds fast racing yachts, stylish daysailers and comfortable curising yachts.”
This brief resulted in the OceanTec 50, a semi custom yacht customized to the specific needs of it´s owner - be it sailing with a full crew of eight or short handed.
The OceanTec 50 is a modern, high performance cruising yacht that rarely has to deal with bad weather by maintaining high average speeds. A yacht that enables you to pick your weather windows for smooth sailing and outrun bad weather if necessary.
She incorporates a powerful, highly refined hull form with excellent seagoing qualities, a comfortable and practical living space, rugged high-tech composite structure, and simple, reliable systems designed to withstand the worst the sea can throw at it.
The result is a design offering exceptional performance, safety, live aboard comfort and unbounded long range, fast cruising potential.
“ When Andreas came up with the project idea, it sounded like an obvious thing to do, and an exciting one as well. We played with many versions from 47 to 52 feet and ended up quite in the middle with a yacht that is easy to handle, fast, comfortable and very rewarding. Eventually great hydro- and aerodynamics get lots of attention in a cruising yacht.”
The design will also be suitable for various rating rules such as IRC and ORC, depending on how the design is configured. The standard 3m draft keel option is of cast SG iron with composite fairings and lead bulb. Shallow draft and lifting keel options are also available. Rig options can be tailored to the type of sailing the owner wishes to do – including a runner-less version with square-top mainsail. Other options available include a solid mainsheet arch and windshield to offer an unobstructed cockpit, fully protected from the elements.
“ This yacht is a real challenge for any progressive yard willing to stick to reasonable budgets while delivering a fast, safe and reliable sailing yacht. Working in a team with Tom and Andreas gives us the confidence that we will turn out a very special yacht that fully meets the expectations of her future owner.”
